European Accessibility Act (EAA) and EN 301 549 Compliance
The European Accessibility Act (EAA) has been enforceable since June 28, 2025. It requires businesses operating in the EU digital market to meet mandatory digital accessibility standards, meaning that entities doing business in the EU must ensure EAA compliance. The law applies to websites, mobile apps, e-commerce, financial services, and telecommunications, ensuring people with disabilities have full access to digital services.
The EAA is a directive, meaning each EU member state must adopt it into national law. Some countries, like Ireland, have created new accessibility laws. In contrast, others have modified existing regulations, leading to inconsistent enforcement across the EU.
Accessibility under the EAA is not a one-time milestone. It requires ongoing monitoring, remediation, and documented compliance efforts across digital properties.
